The Bel Ombre district is situated on the North West Coast of Mahe Island about 6km from Victoria. It is bounded by the sea with a magnificent coastline from the mouth of Anse Major River to its boundary with the beaches of the Beau Vallon District in the East, by St. Louis and Bel Air Districts in the South and Port Glaud in the West. Bel Ombre District covers an area of 941.19 hectares of land.
The name of Bel Ombre is probably derived from its location in the “shades” of its features, surrounding of mountains, hills and valleys. Some says that the name may have some special ties with Mauritius with which Seychelles has strong historical connection.
Bel Ombre is divided into 11 sub districts and with the development of some areas in Bel Ombre, the district has lost some of its historical features and beaches. Still it is surrounded by its green environment and beautiful beaches that remains, that always the main attraction that helps contribute in the tourism growth for our district and country.Bel Ombre is also a Treasure and Heritage Site (Historical /cultural tourism)
