Anse Aux Pins

Origin of Name and History

Anse Aux Pins owns its name to the casuarinas trees that used to grow abundantly there. “Pins” is the French translation of pinewood which is the casuarina timber. Anse Aux Pins is mountainous with many streams running to the low lying areas of Anse Aux Pins Central with thick vegetation.

The Anse Aux Pins District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes:

Anse Aux Pins District Administration Office

Seychelles is divided into 26 Districts and each District having its

Administration Office.  Anse Aux Pins is one of these Administrative Districts. The  District Administration Office headed by a District Administrator serves as an interface between the Local and Central Government.

The Office provides a variety of social and community programmes and services through effective networking and collaboration with various Government Agencies, NGOs and Private Agencies. Such services includes:

• Welfare assistance applications by Agency for Social Protection 
• Services by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Family 

The youth of the district are actively involved in various sports and cultural activities.

The District’s Logo with motto represents and signifies abounding in casuarina trees which protect its  coastline; so the young ones can safely bathe in its tepid waters whilst the adults go out to its protected reefs to harvest some of the prized seafood; today associated with top scoring football teams; proud and determined; Anse Aux Pins will continue “Fighting for Excellence”

Anse Boileau

Origin of Name and History

The district derived its name from an 18^th century Fench Cpatain named “Boileau” who in 1790 arrived in Seychelles in his ship “Archille”. However history teaches us that the district was discovered by Lazare Picaud who landed at Anse Boileau ,who accidentally taught it was Baie Lazare.

Location

Anse Boileau District lies on the Western Coast of Mahe about 24km form Victoria, the capital. As a coastal district, it is situated between Baie Lazare in the South and Grand Anse in the North. The coastal plains of Anse Boileau spread northwards towards the lowlands of Barbarons and Bon Espoir Estate and westwards the mountainous Forest region of Burlee where endemic species of Palms grow.

The District’s Logo with motto “Striving together for Prosperity” represents and signifies a strong fishing and agricultural district, provider of many of the islanders’ basic needs, graced with an idyllic coastline where some believe Lazare Picault first landed, whilst nature-shaped majestic boulders that one cannot miss when passing through the district.

Anse Etoile

Origin of Name and History

Anse Etoile District is named after the boat “L’etoile”, which together with “La Boudeuse” formed part of the expedition which Louis Antoine de Bougainville (1729-1811) a French explorer carried across the world, arriving in Seychelles in 1770.

The District has various community facilities such as a Primary School and Creche, One Church (Roman Catholic), One playing field, One multipurpose court with lighting facilities, One Day Care Centre, One Community Centre and facilities for the community’s fishermen.

Location

The Anse Etoile District is the last 4km stretch of coastal strip on the eastern side of Mahe that adjoins with the northeast tip of Ma Constance, De Quincy Village, Maldive, La Gogue and La Retraite which are all residential areas.

The District’s Logo with motto represents and signifies the district of the guiding star, that guides its fishermen to the abounding corals, the mainstay for its people for years, also graced by the stupendous banyan tree, surprising all, standing tall and revived “Shine to the future”

Anse Royale

Origin of Name and History

Anse Royale has a long colonial history and the name of “Anse Royale” is literally in French meaning “Royal Bay” when translated in English, “Anse” is from the vast coastline landscape which stretches the length of the narrow bay from beginning to the end of the district border found meticulously between Au cap and the Takamaka District.

Location

The Anse Royale District lies on the South East coast of Mahe approximately 25km from Victoria. Bounded in the North by the Au Cap District and in the South by the Takamaka District, Anse Royale enjoys the status of being one of the most attractive places on Mahe especially for its beaches Anse Royale, Anse Baleine, Anse Bougainville and Anse Parnel.

The District’s Logo represents the district’s long colonial history, seat of the original Spice Garden, very popular today with visitors and locals alike, for its sandy beaches and their sense of getaway where one is transported back in time, all symbolised through the open book against the calm backdrop of Souris islet and the flavour of the cinnamon

Au Cap

Origin of Name and History

Au Cap District was created in 1997. Au Cap has many interesting features. Its coastline is sheltered by the headland (Le Cap) and the plains were once thriving coconut plantations.

The Au Cap District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes: One Day Care Centre; one Primary School and Creche; One playing field with international standard, a mini Hall and multi purpose court and Roman Catholic Church at Pointe Au Sel.

Location

The Au Cap District lies on the South East coast of Mahe between Anse Royale in the South and Anse Aux Pins in the North. Its 3 km coastline stretches from the junction of Reef Estate and La Plaine St Andre.

The District’s Logo with motto “Building upon Charm Together” depicts a district whose coastline is sheltered by a headland (Le Cap), whose coastal plain lent itself to plantation farming, inside their doors the Creole culture is upheld, in both the traditional and the modern.

Baie Lazare

Origin of Name and History

Baie Lazare District derives its name from an 18^th century French navigator Lazare Picault who was sent to Seychelles in 1742 by the Governor of Mauritius.

Location

The Baie Lazare District lies on the South West coast of Mahe, 25km from Victoria. Its northern boundary is the road that branches from Anse a la Mouche and leads down Les Canelles, in the East. The southern boundary is Point Maravi. In the interior the islands slope gradually towards the hilly ridges of le Desert

The District’s Logo with motto represents and signifies the district, located in the sheltered bay where the famous Lazare Picault first set foot in 1742, a community that has remained intimately linked to the maritime world and its colonial past, the Church of St Francis of Assisi stands in a picturesque location overseeing the Indian Ocean and the beauty of all that God created and at Baie Lazare District they live up to their motto “United in Tradition for Success”.

Baie Ste Anne Praslin

Origin of Name and History

The Baie Ste Anne District was originally named as Anse L'Amour. It got its name by Catholic Priest Father Leon Des Avancher” in the year 1851.

The Baie Ste Anne Praslin District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes:  One Primary School, One Creche, One playing field, One Community Centre, One Day Care Centre, Two Multi Purpose Courts and One Roman Catholic Church, One Hospital, One Port and One Police Station.

Location

Baie Ste Anne Praslin is situated on the South east part of Praslin and is enclosed by the headland of “Au Morne” in the North and that of “Fond Ferdinand” in the south where the jetty is located.

The curving coast is made up of 5 beaches: Anse Takamaka, Anse Bonnet Carre, Anse Madge, Anse L’amour, Anse Badamier and Anse Lafarin.

The district’s logo and motto depict the district as the economic heart of Praslin, teeming with life and activity, the island of intrepid seafarers with forefathers skilled in boat building, a real community where traditional values and good community spirit still prevail, known for its splendid Cote d’Or, its popular jetty, and the ‘Roche Boke” cross and of course a growth centre for the future.

Beau Vallon

Origin of Name and History

Beau Vallon got its name from its topography: Vallon meaning (small valley) – hence Beau Vallon (beautiful Valley). Beau Vallon is the most blatantly touristic district in the Seychelles.

Location

The Beau Vallon  District lies on the North West side of Mahe, 5 km from Victoria, the capital. In the interior, it is a broad stretch of low land between the Creve Coeur and Le Niole hills and adjoins with the district of St Louis in the East and Bel Ombre in the West.

The District’s Logo with motto represents and signifies the district being famous for its Beau Vallon Beach, where one can bask in its glorious sunshine, or in the shade of its takamaka trees, or enjoy the waters lapping at your feet, on the Beau Vallon Beach one can pay testimony to both the traditional and the modern, and when the day is done, one can still soak up to rays of the setting sun, and enjoy a “Taste of Paradise”.

Bel Air

Origin of Name and History

Bel Air probably got its name for the pure and fresh air and for its proximity, so close to nature, fed by numerous streams which cascade down its rocky cliffs.

The Bel Air District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes: One Day Care Centre; One Primary School and Creche; One mini playing field, two Multi Purpose Courts, One Community Centre and One old Cemetery and One Anglican Church.

Location

The Bel Air District is a suburb of Victoria in the North East of Mahe. It is situated next to St Louis district. It is overlooked by the rugged ridges of “Trois Freres”  (699m) and it is the main 9km road from Victoria that cuts through the district that leads into the forests of Sans Soucis.

Bel Ombre

Origin of Name and History

Standing for the “beautiful shade”. In English, the name of the Bel Ombre is probably derived from its location in the “shade”. Bel Ombre District is surrounded of mountains, hills and valleys.

The Bel Ombre District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes:  One Fishing Port, One Primary School One playing field, One Community Centre, Two Multi Purpose Courts, One Roman Catholic Church and One Anglican Church.

Location

The Bel Ombre District is situated in the North West part of the main island Mahe, about 8km form Victoria the capital. It is surrounded by the sea with a magnificent coastline from the mouth of the river Major up to the boundary. It shares with the beautiful beach of the neighbouring Beau Vallon District. From the narrow coastal strip, the District rises to a central highland which reaches a height of 881 metres with the Trois Feres Mountian range in the background.

Cascade

Origin of Name and History

Cascade owes its name to the waterfall that flows there. The district has a rich historical past. It was among the first place on Mahe where in 1873, the first Catholic missionaries started their evangelical crusade in a small chapel constructed in 1882. The St Andrew’s Church now stands as a national monument.

The Cascade District has various community facilities such as a Primary School and Creche, one Church (Roman Catholic), two playing fields, one multipurpose court with lighting facilities and newly built fishing jetty and facilities for the community’s fishermen.

Location

The Cascade District lies on the East coast of Mahe, 7km away from Victoria. Situated between Les Mamelles and Pointe Larue, the district extends over 1012 hectares encompassing the residential sprawls of Brilliant, Petit Paris and the coastal region of Talbot.  The Mt Sebert is 551m high.

The District’s Logo with motto represents and signifies the waterfalls, at the base of the imposing granite cliffs, are many of Seychelles best endemic plants, nature trails, and for decades its inhabitants have depended on the continuous flow of the Cascade River especially the washer-women and on the sea, for this is also a Community of fishermen whose catch was graced by St Andrew, the patron saint of fishermen, of the district

English River

Origin of Name and History

The river that has given its name to the district refers to the first recorded landing in the Seychelles. It was in 1609 that an expedition of the British East India Company led by Alexander Sharpeigh arrived here. At that time of course, the sea reached up to this part of the coast, and apparently it was at this particular river that the English used to come for their water provisions.

The English River has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes the Judiciary, National Assembly, Petrol Station, Victoria Bus Terminal, Music Stadium, One playing field with three multipurpose courts and a Health Centre.

Location

The English River District lies in the Central Region of Mahe between Anse Etoile, in the North and Perseverance, St Louis and Mont Buxton.
The total area covered is 1.7 km² with a population density of 2,747 km².
