English River
Origin of Name and History
The river that has given its name to the district refers to the first recorded landing in the Seychelles. It was in 1609 that an expedition of the British East India Company led by Alexander Sharpeigh arrived here. At that time of course, the sea reached up to this part of the coast, and apparently it was at this particular river that the English used to come for their water provisions.
Community Facilities and Services
The English River has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes the Judiciary, National Assembly, Petrol Station, Victoria Bus Terminal, Music Stadium, One playing field with three multipurpose courts and a Health Centre.
Location
The English River District lies in the Central Region of Mahe between Anse Etoile, in the North and Perseverance, St Louis and Mont Buxton.
The total area covered is 1.7 km2 with a population density of 2,747 km2.
Districts Logo and Motto
The District’s Logo with motto represents and signifies source of life to early settlers, instrumental to early development, today so much part of the country’s greater development and Victoria’s future, English River is “Aiming for the best”.
