Glacis was named for the its amazing granitic boulders.

The Glacis District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes: One Day Care Centre; one Primary School and Creche; One playing field , One Community Centre, One Health Clinic, and One Roman Catholic Church.

Location

The Glacis District lies on the North West side of Mahe about 20km from Victoria. From the coast the land becomes more or less rugged, rising sharply in the interior to the uplands and hills of Mont Howard (458m) in the North and Hangard (374m) in the West. The first inhabitants who came to settle at Glacis came from Reunion Island.

The District’s Logo with motto represents and signifies secluded beaches and coves amongst granitic boulders, as the emblem says it is the district of “Peace and Harmony”,for this is the district of a rich spiritual life and tradition, also known for its harmless whale sharks,  Machabée, one sub-district area is named after the French Ship Le Duke de Machabée, the Glacis peak known for its viewing post and Sorento, another sub district area is named after a similar village in Italy, reminiscent of hills and valleys

Grand Anse Mahe

Origin of Name and History

Grand Anse Mahe is named after its huge sweep of beach where the sea is notorious for its strong undertow. Not withstanding its treacherous waters, the beach, one of the longest on Mahe is a beautiful sight to behold.

Community Facilities and Services

The Grand Anse Mahe District has various community facilities such as a Primary School and Creche, One Church (Roman Catholic), two playing fields, two multipurpose court with lighting facilities and two Community Centres.

Location

The Grand Anse Mahe District is situated on the West coast of Mahe and is bounded in the North by the district of Port Glaud. It comprise of “La Misere” through which a 10km mountain pass links the district to the Plaisance district in the East of Mahe, and Barbarons in the South. It has always been an agricultural district.

The District’s Logo with motto represents and signifies the district graced with lovely beaches both Petit Anse and Grand Anse, known as the agricultural district of the island that grew from strength to strength and developed into the Agricultural Research Station,  which today harbours some of nature’s best kept secrets such as the Vacoa Parasol and treasures to be safeguarded with – “Solidarity, Discipline, Loyalty”

Grand Anse Praslin

Origin of Name and History

Grand Anse Praslin was named after the long white curving sweep of sand that characterises this part of the coast which, unsurprisingly enough, has become a popular holiday resort.

The Grand Anse Praslin District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes:  One Primary School, One Secondary School, One playing field, One Community Centre, Two Multi Purpose Courts and One Roman Catholic Church.

Location

The Grand Anse Praslin is situated on the Southern Middle part of Praslin, encompassing Nouvelle Decouverte Estate in the East and Amitie in the North, the coastal plain slopes up into the highlands of Pasquiere, La Plaine Hollandaise and Salazie.

The district’s logo depicts Grand Anse Praslin as  the home to the Black Parrot and the prized endemic Coco de Mer, known for its Garden of Eden, the Vallee de Mai,  the home to five other endemic palms of Seychelles, (Latanier Latte, Feuille Hauban, Millepatte), a real haven for the weary urban dwellers and palmiste and remembered by visitors passing through for its splendid waterfall

Ile Perseverance One

Origin of Name and History

Ile Perseverance District got its name following a national competition launched in order to name certain newly reclaimed islands.

Ile Perseverance was created artificially during the 1999. It is situated North coast of Mahe in order to make way for one of the biggest housing estate project in Seychelles. The first batch of houses served with utilities and roads was allocate with the first inhabitant in February 2011. The district has an estimated average population of +4625 inhabitants.

The Ile Perseverance consists of reclaimed land. It is the largest social housing project ever undertaken in Seychelles. A dredger known as Marco Polo, originated from Holland carried out the reclamation work. With a length of 1.4km, an area of 0.99 km2 and a width of 1.0km, the housing estate was designed to accommodate 2608 housing units in terms of 2 bedrooms and 3 bedrooms semi-detached, townhouses and apartments. Five contractors were engaged in the construction work, two of which were Chinese construction companies-China State Quindao and China Shenyang. The athletes who took part in the eighth Indian Ocean Games of August 2011 occupied the first few houses that were completed. The first 450 families moved into their houses in January.

La Digue

Origin of Name and History

La Digue District is named after a French Frigate “La Digue” which together with another boat “La Curieuse” formed the 1768 expedition commanded by Marion Dufrene.

The La Digue District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes: One Day Care Centre; one Primary School, Creche; One Secondary School, One playing field, One Community Centre, One Roman Catholic Church, One Hospital, One Police Station etc.

Location

The La Digue District lies 50 km from Mahe and 4.5km from Praslin. The main portion of the island consists of a ridge with steep and rocky sides which starts at the Northern end of the island at La Passe and runs roughly South East towards Cap Bayard rises fairly until it culminates in a peak of 330 metres called nid d’aigles high above the eastern point of the island.

The District’s Logo represents the 4^th largest island of the Seychelles named after a French ship which landed there in 1768, island of the oxcart and the endemic Paradise Flycatcher, chosen by visitors for its tranquility and slow pace of life where the locals and visitors displace by bicycle and oxcart, famous for its majestic granitic boulders that have been carved by nature, a true reflection of our colonial past, La Digue, the island with a long history in boat building where traditional practices can still persist.

Les Mamelles

Origin of Name and History

Les Mamelles' history is very recent as it was once was a sub-district of the Plaisance district.  In 1993, for the National Assembly election, the Commissioner of Election worked on a plan to equilibrate the population in the eastern district and redefine the electoral boundaries. In 1996, Les Mamelles was created and in 1997 National Assembly approved the new boundaries.

The name Les Mamelles originated from two mountain peaks named Morne des Mamelles inspiring the Breast of a woman hence ‘Mamelles’ for breast in French.

The Les Mamelles District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes: One Community Centre, One Multi Purpose Court, One Health Centre and five places of worship for other various denominations.

Location

Les Mamelles District is on the eastern side of Mahe, 3 kilometres from the capital, Victoria. It is bounded in the North by the Plaisance District, in the South by Cascade,  in the East by Roche Caiman and in the west by Grand Anse Mahe. The district covers a ground area of 165.917 hectares It is amongst the eight districts forming Greater Victoria. It is the least populated district with 2315 inhabitants.

The District’s Logo with motto represents the “Morne des Mamelles”, the well-known peaks found. Frequented by the famous Corsair – Leon Francois Hodoul and also African King Prempeh, home to one of the finest colonial building; Chateau Mamelles, where man and nature live in harmony despite present-day development.

Mont Buxton

Origin of Name and History

Mont Buxton is named after St Thomas Fowell Buxton (1786-1845), an English brewer and social reformer who, as a member of the House of Commons, led aggressive campaigns for the 1833 abolition of slavery in all British colonies.

The Mont Buxton District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants.

Location

The Mont Buxton District is a suburb of Victoria and is situated west of the Capital, adjacent to Union Vale in the North and Belonie in the South. The inland slopes up towards the steep ridges of “Creve Coeur” 386m falling over to the West side of Mahe at Beau Vallon.

The District’s Logo with motto represents and signifies the district strategically perched upon a mountain, overlooking the East Coast, well known for its Mont Pavillon which led the ships as they approached; today its role still consists in watching the schooners which continue on their way across the ocean.

Mont Fleuri

Origin of Name and History

Mont Fleuri was named after a village in Flacq, Mauritius with which Seychelles was once ruled until 1903 – as a single British protectorate.

The Mount Fleuri District has various community facilities and services at the benefit of the inhabitants. Such includes:  One Primary School, One Secondary School, One playing field, One Community Centre, Two Multi Purpose Courts and One Roman Catholic Church.

Many national Institutions and government establishments are located at Mont Fleuri such as the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Health, the Victoria Hospital, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the University of Seychelles.

Location

The Mont Fleuri District is situated 1 km from the capital Victoria, South of Victoria and on the east end of Mahe. It is surrounded by the following districts, Plaisance, Roche Caiman and Bel Air and is one of the most important outskirts of Victoria. It is also an important district on Mahe in terms of its location, as its serves to accommodate many ministries, agencies, prominent businesses.

Plaisance

Origin of Name and History

Plaisance District shares the same toponymn with a place on the South East coast of Mauritius where the airport is situated. Plaisance is a French word that basically means “pleasure”

Location

The Plaisance District lies on the East side of Mahe about 2km from Victoria. Wedged between Mont Fleuri to the North and Les Mamelles to the South, it includes the western province of La Louise which is mainly a residential area.

The District’s Logo with motto “Anmenn en Vizyon Ver Prosperite” represents and signifies the district standing at the crossroads, on the outskirts of the capital Victoria, long known as a hub, full of life and activities.

Pointe Larue

Origin of Name and History

Ponte Larue was named after a Nurse, Madame Claire Marie de La Rue, who was amongst the first twenty-eight who were brought to Ste Anne in August 1770.

The Pointe Larue District has various community facilities such as a Community Centre, a Day Care Centre, A Secondary School, a Primary School and Creche, one Church (Roman Catholic) and one Anglican Chapel, one playing field and a multi-purpose court.

Location

The Pointe Larue District is situated in the East of Mahe, about 8km from Victoria, the capital. It is mainly the coastal strip that stretches from the highway junction at Anse Talbot to the Anse Aux Pins District where the “riviere grand basin” drains into the sea.

The District’s Logo with motto represents and signifies the early settlement of Seychelles, through its international Airport, Seychelles' gateway to the World, whilst its domestic terminal serves as the crossroad between the islands, symbolic of diligence and determination, Pointe Larue is the provider of opportunities for Seychelles.

Port Glaud

Origin of Name and History

Port Glaud derives its name from a Captain named Glau who landed at Port Glaud at the end of the 18^th Century. Port Launay, which is a main seaside attraction of the district, is named after Denis Joseph Launay, a French Military Officer.

Location

The Port Glaud District is the last 6km stretch of coastline on the West of Mahe that ends in the contour which curves to the right towards the Northern West side of Mahe. It includes Cap Ternay Estate and Port Launay Estate as well as the promontory Ternay Bluff. The inland extends upwards into the forests of Morne Seychellois National Park.
