CASCADE

Lilianne Biong
District Administrator

Cascade is a district found along the West side of the main island of Mahe which stands apart as it has its own distinct culture. Travelling from Victoria towards the South, Cascade begins at Petit Paris ans ends at Anse Talbot which makes it around 8 Km from Victoria.

The district was named after the small tributaries that ‘cascade’ into a big river to the sea. The river and its waterfall were subsequently also named Cascade river and Cascade waterfall.

Cascade was and still is a fishing village, back in the 20th century it was the source of livelihood for most of the villagers. In 1901, The Fisheries Ordinance came into force to regulate and manage the fishing industry and Anse Cascade was among the 38 landing stations declared on Mahe. There were many villagers who applied for a fishing license and the trade has continued on through generations. At that time, the villagers were so sea faring that most preferred to travel by pirogue, even though there was a bridge built at Cap MaGeorgine that allowed land access.
